The Long Island Roller Rebels hosted the Montreal Roller Derby on
August 16, 2008. Much like the first bitter frost on the Canadian
tundra, the Rebels hot streak was snapped, as MRD froze out the Rebels,
with a final score of 75 to 164.
The Canadians rolled into Skate Safe full of humor and ambition,
Georgia W. Tush leading her Skidz in warm-ups and chanting, sign waving
and general north-of-the-border nationalism. But these were no jokers!
The Montreal Roller Derby are athletes above all, and by the time the
Skate Safe doors were opened, they were raring to go!
Montreal leapt off the line and to the front of the pack, where they
remained for the bulk of the bout. A roster of nimble jammers, such as
Beat Her Pan-Tease, cut through the LIRR defense. The MRD line simply
moved faster, and LIRR could not compensate with strategies or skill.
By halftime, the score was 53 to 98, MRD.
This is not to say the Rebels played a lousy game! They held in there,
keeping the score as close a margin as possible, with some great jams
and a solid effort. However, quel dommage: the Rebels simply could not
get back on top. All they can do now is straighten their jerseys, ice
their bruises, and never forget the menace to the North! Rematch? Qui
sait! But here's hoping!
The Roller Rebels, never one to sit around licking their wounds for any
extended length of time, are back in action on September 20, same derby
time, same derby place (that would be 7PM at Skate Safe!). They will be
taking on the H.A.R.D. girls - that's Harrisburg Area Roller Derby.
What fate lies in store for your LIRR? Will the Rebels prove the HARD
girls a soft touch? Or will the Rebels end up taking it HARD? Come see
all the action - sit rinkside with a beer - tickets available via
brownpapertickets.com, your favorite rollergirl, or Utopia Hicksville

And of course, tickets available August 31 at the Roller Rebel's second
annual car wash! Come down to Katie's in Smithtown, bring your car or
bike, and the Rebels will get it squeaky clean. Catch up with your
team, take a photo with or get an autograph from your favorite skater,

July 19, 2008 - The Long Island Roller
Rebels hostessed the Wilmington Ruff Rollers of Wilmington, DE, in a
heat of summer match up. The Rebels were still giddy with their victory
over Hudson Valley, and it showed in the evening's performances. From
the first whistle, the Rebels grabbed the lead, and refused to rescind
it throughout the entire bout. The Ruff Rollers, drained by a long, hot
ride into New York combined with an unfamiliar, un-air conditioned
rink, struggled a bit in the start of the first, allowing Amaretto
Sourpuss to score 39 points in just 4 jams.
Star blockers Captain Morgan and Chest Blockwell were in top form, with
D-Ball and MadDonna creating solid defenses against the Ruff Roller
jammers. Seemingly undeterred, the Rollers pushed with every ounce of
strength, as powerhouse jammer Amaretto Sourpuss made it all look easy
with a total of 59 points for the game! Not to be outdone, bionic
superwoman from the future C-Roll, fresh from her stint with the Salt
City Derby Girls, used that high-altitude lung capacity to the max,
scoring 57 points, nickel-and-diming her way through the second period
with 37 points in 7 jams.
By the end of the first, the score was 66 to 53, LIRR. Twisted
Tinkerbell of the Ruff Rollers took a nasty spill, and during the end
of halftime, ace announcers Jake Steel and Pete Bune created a Bangles
sing-a-long, which help assuage some of the atmosphere, which had
become a little heated (both in temperature and temper!).
The second period was cranky, aggressive, full-force derby at its
finest. The Rebels would score just enough points to be out of reach of
the Rollers, who were doing their best to secure control of the front
of the pack and steer victory away from the Rebels. Despite impressive
feats of strength by Rollers Lez B. Inn and Witchblade, the Rebels held
onto their lead. The game ended with a bang, with Amaretto Sourpuss
ejected for accruing one too many visits to the penalty box! The Rebels
kept it together, and closed the game with a 136-103 victory!
One game's a win, two's a streak - can the Rebels keep it going? Come
see for yourself at Skate Safe, August 16, when your Long Island Roller
Rebels take on Montreal Roller Derby. It's international! It's culture!
LIRR's own R. Rose Selavy will be singing the Canadian National Anthem!
En francais! Cold beer at the sidelines, of course. Tickets available
now at brownpapertickets.com, Utopia Hicksville, and our other fine
sponsor locations. Hope to see you there!

In an exciting match up between the Long
Island Roller Rebels and the Hudson Valley Horrors, the Rebels finally
bring home an Interleague win! Not since March of 2007, when the Rebels
faced up against newly accepted WFTDA league: the Steel City Derby
Demons at the first annual East Coast Extravaganza hosted by the Philly
Roller Girls, have the Roller Rebels won an Interleague bout! The bout
started with two all-star jammers, as Regine Bull took the jammer line
for the Rebels against Rough Gem of the Horrors. Regine won lead jammer
status and finished the jam with an outstanding 8 points, as Gem
finished with 5 points. The Rebels would continue to win the period
with maintaining lead jammer status 13 out of the 15 jams in the first
half. The Rebels finished the bout 145 to 78, but would not have done
so without the main point scorers Amaretto Sourpuss (44pts) and Regine
Bull (44pts). Borrowed skaters from Suburbia Roller Derby out of
Westchester County, Black Star Heroine (17pts) and Domestic Violet
(23pts), also helped the Rebels to Victory! Other Borrowed skaters to
fill the Rebels roster were Pony Girl and Suffoh-Kate also of Suburbia
Roller Derby. The bout was played between friends as Long Island has
worked with Hudson Valley for over two years in fostering the sport of
all female roller derby. The rapid improvement of skaters from both
teams greatly improved the competition and made the bout all the more
exciting to watch. Significant hits were made by first year rookie
Chest Blockwell, veterans MadDonna and Captain Morgan, which made it
even more difficult for the Horrors to put points on the board, but not
for the Horrors lack of blocking as Rxy Ramalot Pinky Swears, and
Naughtia Knives made it just as difficult for the Rebels jammers to get
through. The Rebels are thrilled to have this win under their belt and
plan to finish out the season with two more Interleague bout wins, next
up, the Wilmington Ruff Rollers from Wilmington DE……

April 13, Lehigh Valley Pa.
It seemed like
just another night for the Long Island Roller Rebels who traveled out
to battle the Lehigh Hissyfits. Long Island, still bruised from their
record breaking 306 point defeat at the hands of Virginia’s Dominion
Derby Girls; seemed once again destined for defeat. This night seemed
different though. Since this was not a WFTDA sanctioned bout,
Long Island was allowed to borrow a few skaters to fill their roster,
including former Long Island Roller Rebel and now Philly Roller Girl,
Butter Scotch Cripple. Their hopes were high for a win on
this
night. When the first whistle blew to start the bout, Lehigh Valley
sent a different message. Lehigh who came off an embarrassing loss to
Jersey Shore the night before, was determined not to allow a repeat.
Gaining Lead Jammer 90% of the first period, it was clear that Long
Island was in for another long night. The Roller Rebels looked confused
and frustrated as the Lehigh Jammers easily rolled passed their
blockers with only Butter holding the line. At the end of the first
half, long island had only racked up a mere 18 points to Lehigh’s 75.
At
the beginning of the second half, things seemed to change for Long
Island. Jammers Ammaretto Sourpuss and Regine Bull, put the rockets on
and rocked lehigh’s defense earning Lead Jammer 85% of theperiod. Long
Island’s pack communication was superb as they held Lehigh’s Jammer’s
in the pack over and over again. It was the break Long Island needed
and it seemed as if they were on their way to getting back in the game.
Lehigh Valley still had a few things up their sleeve though as they
forged ahead and battled the tough Long Island defense. In the end
Lehigh Valley proved too much for Long Island and earned a 124-77 win.
Long Island did not feel defeated in this bout and took a valuable
lesson home with them. I seemed as if a new beginning was
happening for the Roller Rebels, they began to play as a team!
Long Island would have one more set back in Maine before their June 7
victory over the Hudson Valley Horrors.
Long
Island has two upcoming home bouts that will give them the opportunity
to expand on their recent victory. July 19 against the Wilmington Ruff
Rollers of Delaware and their first international Bout against Montreal
on August 16.

On Saturday, April 5th, the Long Island Roller rebels hosted their
first Women’s Flat Track Derby Association Sanctioned bout at Skate
Safe America in Old Bethpage. The Struggling Roller Rebels who faced
even more set backs over the last few months, losing Trixie Timebomb
and Roxie Heartless to injuries and Anna Tramps retirement from derby
desperately needed a win on this night to get themselves back on track.
They took on the rising star of the South, Dominion Derby Girls. This
was a bout thirteen months in the making as these two teams were to
face off at last years East Coast Extravaganza, but Dominion had to
pull out at the last minute due to roster difficulties.
From the First Whistle, which was blown by the Town of Hempstead’s own
Kate Murray; it was clear that Long Island was in for a very long
night.
Dominion dominated the bout from start to finish, never letting the
very inexperienced Roller Rebels to gain Lead Jammer status at all.
Long Island was also minus star Jammer C-Roll and had more than half
the roster filled with new skaters who had never bouted before. Long
Island was clearly out matched and out played by Dominion, who had
recently defeated Sin City and Ohio. The Roller Rebels never gave up
during the bout and played tough throughout even though it was clear to
them, they had no chance of getting back in the game. When the dust
settled, Long Island was handed a 307-6 defeat. Long Island will try to
turn this loss into a positive on April 13th, when they head to Lehigh
Valley in a non-WFTDA match up with the Lehigh Valley Hissy Fits.
