Put down your beer for a minute and LEARN THE RULES!!

During a game (bout) two teams of five skaters each face off on a flat track. The bout is divided into two, twenty-minute periods. Each period is made-up of several two-minute jams. The object of the jam is for a team’s Jammer to score more points than her opposing Jammer in two minutes. On the first pass, the first Jammer that makes it through the pack without stepping off the track is named the “Lead Jammer.” The Lead Jammer has the power to stop the jam at any time before the two minutes has ended. She indicates that she wants to stop the jam early by placing both hands on her hips. If both Jammers step off the rink before lapping the pack, there is NO Lead Jammer and the jam goes on for the full two minutes. The winning team is the one that has scored the most points at the end of the second period. For each team there are five skaters - one Jammer, one Pivot, and three Blockers – who compete on the flat track in a Jam.

Positions are as follows:

The Jammer
The Jammer is designated by a star on either side of her helmet. Each team begins each Jam with one Jammer on the track. She assumes a starting position behind the pack. The Jammer is the only skater who may score points. The Jammer scores points their second time (and subsequent times) through the pack by passing members of the opposing team.

The Pivot
The Pivot is designated by a stripe down the middle of her helmet. The pivot controls the speed of the pack, calls out plays, and provides guidance to her teammates. The pivot also acts as a Blocker.

The Blockers
Each team has three Blockers on the track during a jam (except in cases of penalties). Legal blocks involve the blocker using her arm, from shoulder
to forearm, to make contact with the front of her opponent's body, from her neck to her waist. Blockers may also use their bodies to block other skaters. Illegal blocks include grabbing, tripping, blocking from behind, elbows in the face, and fighting. Blockers do not have a special helmet designation.

The Pack
The pack consists of the Pivots and Blockers from both teams, skating around the track in formation, at a steady pace. The pack has a maximum of eight skaters at any time – two pivots and six blockers. It is possible for the pack to have fewer than eight skaters due to penalties.

Long Island Roller Rebels Roller Derby is NOT staged or choreographed. We SKATE, we HIT, we BRUISE, we MAIM and we FIGHT!

Discretion is advised to all spectators sitting around the track. Just
watch out you might get a roller girl in your lap!!! But even more to be
concerned with, a skate to the face!
